Creating Form & Order
For this project, we are tasked to design a Non-Denominational Chapel located on the campus of Farmingdale State College. The College wants this Chapel to be a abstract spiritual place where people of all faiths can gather to worship and reflect upon ones own life.
Background Research
Convent of La Tourette by Le Corbusier
At the Convent of La Tourette, light is carefully controlled to enhance the spiritual and architectural experience. Narrow vertical slits and clerestory windows allow diffused natural light to enter, creating a play of light and shadow on the concrete surfaces. Light wells and courtyards bring daylight deep into the building, illuminating inner spaces. In the chapel, a large skylight above the altar floods the space with natural light, reinforcing a serene, contemplative atmosphere. This thoughtful integration of light reflects Le Corbusier's vision of harmonious living and spiritual reflection.
My research and project are clearly influenced by Le Corbusier's design principles, particularly those seen in the Convent of La Tourette. This building is known for its innovative use of light, achieved through cannons, reflectors, and small openings that create a spiritual atmosphere. By incorporating similar design techniques into my chapel, I am emphasizing how light can guide a person's experience, turning the space into one of contemplation and transition. Le Corbusier also uses courtyards and long corridors separating different functions within the building, improving movement while distinguishing spaces. I have implemented this methodology by situating the sacred spaces together while placing offices and utility areas on the opposite side, creating serenity in the spiritual zones. Furthermore, the sleeping quarters within the Convent are situated on the outside of the structure away from the sacred spaces, further dividing life from worship. My chapel continues this theme, making sure the sacred areas are left untouched by practical functions.
The light cannons are influenced by Le Corbusier's design of the Convent of La Tourette. This unique feature channels sunlight and reflects it off strategically placed reflectors on the opposite side, bringing natural light into the interior and creating a dynamic lighting effect.
